Introduction

PATHS OF THE SEA: Paths of the Sea

The Paths of the Sea is located in the Serra do Mar State Park, which is a Conservation Unit created to ensure the full protection of the biological heritage of the Atlantic Forest, while also offering services that encourage environmental education and the integration of people with nature. In addition to its natural wealth, the Park has an important cultural and historical collection with its monuments erected in 1922 in honor of the centenary of Brazil's Independence.

There are three different itineraries for you to enjoy incredible moments alongside the Atlantic Forest.

The Path of the Sea, better known as the Old Road of Santos, cuts through the Serra do Mar and spans 8 kilometers between São Bernardo do Campo and Cubatão. The Lorena Path has 3.5 kilometers of a paved stone path. Along these routes are the 8 Historical Monuments built by the French architect Victor Dubugras: Monument to the Peak, Raiz da Serra Bridge, Circular Belvedere, 500-Year Cross, Lorena Standard, Majoridade Ranch, Ruins, and Paranapiacaba Landing.

The Paths of the Sea provides its visitors with a unique and unforgettable experience amidst the lush nature of the Atlantic Forest and places full of historical significance, spectacular views, and physical, recreational, and educational activities. More than promoting Ecotourism, we place nature as the protagonist and as a resource to be conserved and valued. We aim to awaken the nature within each of us, creating a deep connection with it.

In June 2021, Parquetur took over the management of the Paths of the Sea with the commitment to implement services and improvements such as revitalization of the trails, renovation of parking lots and entrances, implementation of new ecotourism activities, and restoration and maintenance of the historical monuments, which are in the finalization phase – Ruins.

THE HISTORY OF BRAZIL PASSES THROUGH HERE: History of Brazil

All the cultural wealth of the Historical Monuments scattered throughout the park

The Path of the Sea was the first paved access road with concrete in Latin America, linking São Paulo to the coast until the inauguration of the Anchieta Highway in 1947, when it became a secondary route and was renamed the Old Road of Santos.

Before it, the only option for transporting goods from the interior to the port of Santos was the Lorena Path, which was paved with rocks in 1792 and where the regent prince D. Pedro I ascended the mountain towards São Paulo to proclaim Brazil's Independence on September 7, 1822.

Today located in the Paths of the Sea, the Old Road of Santos was reopened in 2002 for ecotourism visitation, and its 8 km of walking reveal an open-air collection of Brazil's history.

In 1922, in commemoration of the 100 years of Brazil's Independence, 8 monuments were built along the Old Road of Santos, which can now be traversed on foot within the Paths of the Sea. Each tells a story and provides unforgettable experiences alongside the nature of the Serra do Mar. In the 1970s, they were listed by CONDEPHAAT – Council for the Defense of Historical, Archaeological, Artistic, and Tourist Heritage of the State of São Paulo.
